Access Your Frequent Folders in Windows with Shell Shortcuts

  • 7 min

It’s not widely known that Windows has defined shortcuts for common paths to folders, which we can access using the shell: prefix.

These shortcuts allow us to quickly access various special folders and operating system functions, without having to navigate through menus or file locations.

Furthermore, it’s even possible to access configuration folders and tools that are normally hidden (or are very difficult to find).

In short, they are a very useful tool (and one of my favorites) for both daily use and task automation.

Unfortunately, as I said, they are very unknown. And personally, I don’t even remember half of them 😅. So we’re making this post to see them and for it to serve as a reminder for everyone (me included).

How to Use Windows Path Shortcuts

We can use path shortcuts in the same way we would use any other path (like for example C:\whatever).

For instance, we can use them in the “Run” dialog box (Win + R):

  1. “Run” Dialog Box: Press Win + R to open the “Run” dialog box.
  2. Enter the Command: Type the command shell: followed by the desired identifier, (for example, shell:startup), and press Enter.

Although that’s not the only place. It’s also possible (and it’s my favorite option 😉) to use it directly in the File Explorer address bar.
